How to verify an AI answer that seems convincing
The AI gave you a detailed answer with citations. It sounds authoritative. But you're not sure it's right. Here's how to verify it — and catch the hallucinations before they cost you.
1. Check the citations exist and say what the AI claims
Start here. If the AI cited "Smith et al., 2023," find that paper. Does it exist? If it does, does it actually support the claim the AI made? Common failure: the AI cites a real paper, but that paper says something different or contradictory. The citation is real but misquoted or misapplied. If the citation doesn't exist at all, you've caught a hallucination.
2. Find the primary source, not the summary
Never trust a secondary interpretation of a source. If the AI said "According to The Guardian,..." find The Guardian article. If it said "Studies show that..." find the actual study. Secondary sources often compress, oversimplify, or misrepresent the primary finding. You need the original.
3. Check the date and context
A true fact can become false over time. "X is the largest city by population" might have been right in 2010 but not in 2024. Ask: when was this true? What's changed? Has the definition changed? (What counts as a "city" varies by country.) AI models often mix timelines and assume facts are evergreen when they're time-sensitive.
4. Separate the claim from the evidence
The AI might make a strong claim ("Algorithm X is 40% faster than Algorithm Y") and give you a source. That source might say X is "sometimes" faster, or faster on specific hardware, or faster in one test only. The claim is often stronger than the evidence supports. Note the gap.
5. Ask "What do the AI's competitors say?"
If the AI recommended Product A over Product B, find independent reviews from people without a stake in the choice. Manufacturer websites, sponsored articles, and even AI models trained on web summaries have a bias. Look for reviews from users or critics who compared the actual products.
6. Check if it's a known misconception
Some AI mistakes are common — the same hallucinations appear across models. If the AI said something surprising, search for "[your claim] false" or "[your claim] myth" to see if it's a known error. Often, you'll find debunks of the exact claim.
7. Ask a different AI the same question
If two independent models give you the same answer with similar reasoning, that's weak confirmation but it's something. If they give you different answers, you've found a disagreement worth investigating. Neither model alone is proof, but divergence is a signal that the question is harder than it looks.
8. Look for hedging language
A confident answer ("This is true") is less reliable than a hedged one ("This is generally true, with exceptions for..."). If the AI uses no qualifiers and you're surprised by the claim, be suspicious. Real knowledge usually comes with caveats.
The verification shortcut
If you don't have time for all eight steps: (1) Check the citations exist, (2) Find the primary source, (3) Ask a different AI. If all three pass, you're probably safe. If any fails, dig deeper.
