Two threads make the stakes concrete. One, titled "Student fails test. When asked about study habits they said they used ChatGPT in a unique way...", drew 596 votes and 114 comments — a case where AI-assisted studying produced a result nobody caught in time. Another, "Falsely accused of using ChatGPT on an exam", pulled 438 votes and 67 comments — the mirror-image risk, where the absence of a way to verify what actually happened cost a student trust they didn't lose fairly.
Neither of those outcomes required an AI to be malicious or even unusually bad. They required exactly one thing: a single AI's output treated as good enough to act on without a second read.
The fix isn't "use a better AI" — it's "stop trusting one"
This is where the studying-AI conversation quietly converges with every other high-stakes AI question — legal, medical, financial. A single model's confidence is not evidence.
